Wick’s World Expands in New Ballerina Trailer

While June 6, 2025, may seem like a long time away, it’s only three weeks away from the theatrical release of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, Ana de Armas’s upcoming spin-off that’s set in the same universe as Keanu Reeves’ action franchise. Preceded by an initial trailer last September and a second trailer in March 2025, Lionsgate has released the last trailer ahead of the movie’s release in theaters.

Ballerina takes place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the 2019 action film that found Keanu Reeves’ titular character on the run after killing crime boss Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio) on Continental Hotel grounds. Wick was placed “excommunicado” by the High Table, and a multi-million-dollar bounty was placed on his head, forcing him to make his way across New York City looking for help and ultimately finding it at the doorstep of the Ruska Roma, a Roma crime syndicate led by the enigmatic Director (Anjelica Huston).

The Director used her organization as a place to house children from the Roma culture and raise them to be not just assassins but ballerina-assassins. In the third film, the character was seen practicing on the stage (Unity Phelan portrayed her as a young girl), but now, she’s the lead character in her spin-off film, with Ana de Armas taking the role of Eve.

Eve Macarro was first introduced in the third movie, but will now be front and center for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. She’s one of a handful of returning characters to reprise their role from previous movies in the franchise, including Huston’s Director and Ian McShane’s Winston (the manager of the Continental Hotel). Lance Reddick, who portrayed the concierge of the Continental, Charon, passed away in March 2023, so it’s both exciting and bittersweet to see his final role in the film included in this last trailer for the movie.

Gabriel Byrne, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Norman Reedus, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and David Castañeda also appear in the new film, each with undisclosed roles, though it’s known that Byrne plays the Chancellor, the main antagonist in the movie, who influences a small town to turn on Eve, while Sharon Duncan-Brewster plays Eve’s mentor, Nogi, and Norman Reedus stars as Daniel Pine.

Echoing the first trailer’s brief insights into her backstory, the first glimpses of Ballerina found John Wick in an almost fatherly role to Eve, whose goal was seemingly revenge against those who had killed her family. In the last trailer, however, Eve’s more than just seeking revenge, and it’s not quite clear what her motivation is. In the same way that John Wick carried the weight of his past murders and all those who worked under him, Eve has left an unclear path of destruction in her wake — and according to the final line in the trailer, won’t stop until her revenge is complete.

“I love the style of John Wick. It’s to-the-point in terms of telling the story but very elevated, with a great aesthetic that can carry the film.” Ballerina Director Jaume Collet-Serra

In the last movie trailer, John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, appears much earlier than in the first trailer, although he does not play a central role in the movie. The script by lead actress Ana de Armas and Shay Hatten places John Wick more on the periphery. An intense emotional connection between Ballerina’s Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves is especially evident in the new film.

“The relationship between Ana and Keanu is like a family secret or something very old. This sister and brother we have are attracted by life and survive in their a way. They survived beautifully, I think, because of their traits, their character. They are brought together by a stronger power that drives their actions,” director Jaume Collet-Serra told Variety.

The Ballerina trailer presents the signature revenge formula that has become synonymous with the John Wick films. The visual elements include night scenes, dance-like movements that accompany many fights, as well as beautifully shot action scenes. One of the most recognizable aspects of action films is the use of hats to express and accentuate characters.

Ana de Armas: ‘Ballerina was the hardest film I’ve ever shot’

In an Instagram Live conversation with Hugo Maggi from Variety, director Collet-Serra said that he learned early on that “Ana is a little star, and she deserved a project where she could show that.” “She had a lot of limitations in the films. I wanted to give her that freedom, let her run wild and, most beautifully, run the camera,” he added. The first film the two worked on was the action-thriller hit “Run for Your Life.” From there, they were keen to team up on future projects, and the stage was set for Ana to get a “crucial role.”

“We started talking about ideas for the future, and we both wanted her to have a role where she could be the focus of the film. We thought, ‘why not in an action film?’” Collet-Serra said. “Ana was on board, of course, and then came the ‘Ballerina’ script by Shay Hatten and Ana de Armas that we loved so much and that seemed perfect for her. That script, in the hands of Ana and me wanting to direct it — it was just meant to be,” he added.
