Several Texas cities have been highlighted in WalletHub’s latest 2026 report assessing the best and worst places to raise a family across the United States, drawing significant attention across the Lone Star State. The study, which includes a comprehensive evaluation of family-related metrics, underscores how communities across Texas are faring when it comes to supporting families and children.

South Texas Cities Struggle in National City Rankings

The WalletHub analysis evaluated 182 U.S. municipalities based on 45 separate metrics in categories including family fun, family affordability, health and safety, education quality, and socioeconomic factors. Among the findings, several prominent South Texas cities—namely Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Brownsville, and Laredo—were classified among the worst cities for families in 2026. Of the 16 Texas cities involved in the evaluation, 11 finished in the bottom half of all city rankings, raising concerns among residents and local leaders.

Key Challenges: Affordability, Safety, and Socioeconomics

Brownsville’s high poverty rate among families, combined with challenges in affordability and negative scoring on socioeconomic factors, placed it near the bottom nationwide. Corpus Christi received the lowest marks in the country for family fun, signaling limited opportunities for recreation and community engagement for families. In addition, San Antonio ranked low on socioeconomic measures, while Houston was singled out for health and family safety concerns.

Affordability Concerns Persist for Texas Families

With family affordability as a major category in the ranking, the study found that many cities in Texas continue to face growing challenges around cost of living, access to affordable housing, and economic security for households. These affordability concerns are magnified when paired with other demographic markers such as poverty rates and availability of family services.

Education Quality and Family Friendly Outlooks

The analysis also spotlighted disparities in education quality, further influencing family decisions to settle in certain communities. Cities that performed poorly in educational opportunities, resources, and school performance found themselves further down on the city rankings list. Such factors play a decisive role in determining whether a city can be regarded as family friendly for new residents or long-term Texans.

Bright Spots: Texas Cities Making Strides for Families

Despite notable challenges, several Texas cities stood out as positive examples in WalletHub’s review. Austin, Plano, Amarillo, Grand Prairie, and Fort Worth were each listed among the best cities in the state for families, demonstrating strengths in areas such as recreation, education quality, community services, and family safety. These results indicate that while certain South Texas areas face hurdles, other regions are paving the way for a more family friendly environment overall.

The Path Forward for Texas Communities

The latest findings serve as a call to action for cities in the region. Improvements in family safety, educational investment, and economic opportunity could help address the factors that contributed to lower rankings. As city officials and advocates take note of the study’s conclusions, the hope is that targeted initiatives can close the gap for families across Texas and elevate the overall quality of life for children and parents alike.
