Sci-fi thriller Invasion returns August 22 with an epic new chapter
You are forgiven if you did not notice Invasion, Apple TV+’s star-studded sci-fi drama that debuted last fall. Between the buzz surrounding two of the service’s most high-profile, high-budget series — Silo and Foundation — Invasion often played second fiddle, despite a steady fan base. The show has received a mixed critical reception, particularly in the first season, for its tendency to prioritize slow-burning character drama over the alien spectacle promised in the show’s premise and marketing.
Invasion has attracted its fair share of defenders as well, with some admitting to a love/hate relationship with the series that balances some genuine positives with less-than-perfect execution.
It also cannot be denied that Invasion has always had its strong suits. The visual aesthetic is impressive and has been striking from the beginning, and the showrunners have not shied away from big, ambitious ideas in their approach to the source material, for better or for worse.
The platform has shared the trailer for Season 3, and based on what we’ve seen, the series might at last be realizing its full potential.
Season 3 Trailer and Synopsis Hint at Darker, Action-Packed Developments
Invasion was created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg, a producer and writer on several X-Men films who also received an Oscar nomination for his work as a producer and writer on The Martian. As for the concept, Invasion has always been at least ambitious. The series offers an unusual take on the alien invasion playbook, one that spotlights the experience of civilians in countries and communities around the world. English, Japanese, and Pashto are all used throughout the series, grounding its far-reaching story with character perspectives.
The first season is a near-time chronicle of the beginning stages of the invasion. The movie’s special effects are often in service of the show’s emotional beats, something that bothered viewers who were more interested in action and seeing the aliens do their thing. But this creative choice defined the show as a more intimate, slow-burning, character-focused sci-fi series.
The action and urgency of the story were clearly on the way, as the first season finale set up a world in which the full extent of the alien invasion was unavoidable and imminent. Season 2 did its part to pick up the pace and up the stakes. The show took on a new life as it explored what its core characters would do in an irrevocably different world. Humanity has been confined to small safe zones, and survival is not guaranteed. Most are forced to make hard decisions just to stay alive, and characters who were thought to have lost one another are forced into life-or-death situations.
Season 3 Will Have Characters Unite for a Dangerous Mission Against Aliens
Season 3 of Invasion will pick up two years after the end of the previous season, and everything is worse. The new season’s official synopsis also sets the stage for the protagonists to unite and face the challenge together. In previous seasons, key characters were separated by continents, but the third season will see them all working together in a joint mission to breach the alien mothership. It’s a major change of pace for the series, which has until now told a more fractured story.
The most developed characters include Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as polarizing tech entrepreneur Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. Erika Alexander joins the main cast as a series regular for Season 3, continuing Invasion’s track record of impressive actors from around the world.
The official synopsis also details that the aliens are now at their “apex” form, characterized by “deadly tendrils” capable of “radical, relentless transformation.” The action will also be on an “unimaginably grand scale,” with key characters forming new alliances to face a threat that endangers all of humanity. Those on Earth will need to pull together to give themselves any hope of surviving, and as they do so, they will also have to balance relationships that may change or fracture during their mission.
Viewers who have stuck with Invasion from the beginning have had some of their questions and frustrations answered, and the direction of Season 3 may give the series the kick it needs to reach a new level of intensity and scale. From a story perspective, Season 3 also promises to wrap up the biggest narrative arcs, while serving the more movie special effects-driven, big-screen alien confrontation viewers may have been craving for two seasons.
On paper, the third season has all the potential in the world to elevate the show and please viewers on all fronts. The best Invasion can do at this point is combine its character work with an increased emphasis on movie special effects, thrills, and the sense of urgency that can take a show from “is it really for me” to “don’t miss this.”
