In a significant stride towards the future of artificial intelligence, Google has unveiled its latest custom-designed processor: Google has released the Ironwood TPU, which represents the seventh iteration of its Tensor Processing Unit architecture. Google created a new chip to meet the rapidly increasing computational needs of its advanced Gemini models, which require complex reasoning functions that Google refers to as “thinking.”

Google repeatedly highlights the essential relationship between its advanced AI models and its carefully engineered infrastructure. Ironwood stands as a crucial element in this ecosystem with the ability to significantly boost inference performance and improve the contextual awareness of sophisticated AI systems. Through its new TPU Ironwood, which it deems its most scalable and powerful creation yet, the company aims to establish a future where AI systems actively interact with users by independently gathering information and producing pertinent results. Google’s “agentic AI” vision revolves around a proactive user-centered approach, while Ironwood operates as the main force behind the “age of inference.”

Ironwood: Powering the Next Generation of AI

Ironwood establishes a significant throughput enhancement beyond the capabilities of previous TPU generations. Google aims to build massive liquid-cooled clusters that integrate up to 9,216 Ironwood chips into their ambitious deployment strategy. The newly enhanced Inter-Chip Interconnect (ICI) enables vast computational arrays to communicate seamlessly and efficiently for rapid high-bandwidth data exchange throughout the system.

Google’s extensive processing capacity will serve both its internal R&D department as well as external cloud developers. Ironwood will be available in two distinct configurations: The Ironwood system offers two main configurations: the 256-chip server designed for moderate AI workloads and the 9,216-chip cluster engineered to manage the most complex AI tasks.

The complete Ironwood pod demonstrates extraordinary processing capabilities, which achieve an impressive 42.5 Exaflops for inference computing tasks. Every Ironwood chip achieves 4,614 TFLOPs of peak throughput, which represents a major performance improvement over earlier TPU designs as reported by Google. Each Ironwood chip now contains 192GB of memory, which represents six times the amount found in Trillium TPU. The memory bandwidth has expanded by 4.5 times to achieve a remarkable value of 7.2 Tbps.

Decoding the Performance Metrics

The process of comparing AI chip performance remains complex because different benchmarking methods generate varying results. Google evaluates Ironwood’s performance primarily through FP8 precision metrics. The company states Ironwood “pods” deliver 24 times faster performance than similar sections of leading supercomputers but consumers should interpret this claim cautiously because not all supercomputers have built-in FP8 hardware support.

Google’s direct performance comparisons failed to include its TPU v6 (Trillium) hardware. Google has announced that Ironwood delivers double the performance-per-watt of its v6 predecessor. The company spokesperson stated that Ironwood serves as the new strategic successor to the TPU v5p, while Trillium followed the weaker TPU v5e. Trillium reached a peak performance level of 918 TFLOPS when operating at FP8 precision.

The Implications for the Future of AI

Despite the inherent complexities in benchmarking AI hardware, the underlying message is clear: Ironwood marks a major advancement in the capabilities of Google’s AI infrastructure. The robust base that enabled rapid development of advanced models like Gemini 2.5 now benefits from Ironwood’s significantly improved speed and efficiency.

Google predicts that Ironwood’s improved inference abilities and increased efficiency will lead to groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence throughout the next year. Ironwood aims to deliver essential computational power that enables complex models and agentic abilities to become fundamental components of Google’s “age of inference” vision, which demands AI to become a proactive and intelligent force in our digital existence.
