Strange New Worlds S3 Trailer Highlights Crew Camaraderie
The wait is over. Paramount+ has officially released the trailer for Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will premiere on July 17, 2025. Fans of the series have had to be patient, as the only official release for the third season was a teaser trailer back in April. Now, with the full trailer, fans can get their first good look at the next big adventure for the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Strange New Worlds Season 2 was all about a big conflict with the Gorn, an extraterrestrial species with whom Starfleet has been at war for years. After a visit to a Federation colony world ends with it being invaded by Gorn ships, the Enterprise crew becomes split up and captured. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and a few other crew members find themselves on the ship having to make a life or death decision of whether to comply with Starfleet orders or risk everything to try and rescue their shipmates.
The decision, of course, is to do the more difficult thing and Pike’s Season 3 arc will pick up from there. The trailer picks up where the second season finale left off, with the crew being held hostage by the Gorn and Pike doing his best to keep up his end of the deal. Footage that was shown back in October at New York City Comic-Con includes this exact moment, as well as a continuation of one of the space battle sequences that began in the finale.
Paramount+ trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3.
The trailer for Season 3 of Strange New Worlds continues this tradition, and it’s clear that it will pick up from the cliffhanger finale and finish off the war with the Gorn in a way that no one is going to expect. Star Trek has long had a tradition of its lead ships and crews going from conflict to conflict, and it seems like Strange New Worlds will not be an exception, even if it does finish off this particular story.
The full trailer also provides more of a sense of what this next batch of adventures will be like. The teaser trailer provided a sense of new and strange encounters that the crew will encounter, but the trailer really emphasizes just how much variety the show has in terms of genre. In terms of stories, Strange New Worlds is going to include everything from the sci-fi focused war stories, but also more straightforward dramas, mysteries, and yes, even rom-coms.
To help tell these stories, the series will once again have its full cast on board. As for additions to the cast, the big newcomer to the main cast is Cillian O’Sullivan as Dr. Roger Korby. Korby is a familiar face to longtime Trekkies as he was played by Michael Strong in the Season 2 episode “Operation: Annihilate!” on The Original Series.
In the canon of Strange New Worlds, Korby is a medical archaeologist and a noted archaeologist in his own right who happens to be Chapel’s long-lost fiancé. Korby mysteriously reappears out of nowhere on one of the planet’s the crew visits, which will complicate matters given that Chapel has since begun a relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck).
The new season will also feature guest stars Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both of whom are expected to have major roles that bring more comedy to the upcoming episodes. The trailer definitely hammers home the variety on display, with the show not just using the action and war footage to build up the war story, but also using tender moments between the crew, the love triangle between Chapel, Spock, and Korby, and the aftereffects of one ill-advised science experiment.
In perhaps the biggest tease of the trailer, it does a snapshot of James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) in the captain’s chair in the process of a kind of crash course in Starfleet leadership from Pike. While he is in the role of captain, it is very much unclear just how important Kirk will be to the action in Season 3, and it seems very likely that this will be more of an extended training exercise, as Pike is quick to remind Kirk about the responsibility of a captain’s actions: “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
The trailer also has a fun beat at the end as Spock has to teach a “high five” to Oswalt’s Vulcan. After successfully showing him how to do it the first time, Spock asks him to go “down low” and follows up on the classic slow move of a high-five, much to the Vulcan’s confusion. He asks Spock “Why would you do that?” to which Spock flatly replies, “Because you are too slow.” It’s a fun exchange that highlights some of the show’s sense of humor.
