After months of speculation and developer previews plus limited beta testing Google has begun the official rollout of Android 16. Pixel devices will receive the update first as predicted while other Android phones will get it in the upcoming weeks and probably months.

Pixel device owners will notice the over-the-air (OTA) update roll-out starting today. People who don’t want to wait can download system images and manual update files from Google’s developer site. You don’t need to act quickly unless you have a special interest in the update. The update contains no major modifications at this stage.

Android 16 debuted quietly but brought several notable new features while hinting at bigger updates planned for later this year.

Notification Shade, Live Updates, and Security Enhancements

The notification shade displays the most significant modification in Android 16. Google launched bundled notifications as part of Android 7.0 Nougat. Android 16 requires notification bundling as a mandatory feature instead of an optional setting. The Android 16 notification system combines notifications from the same app into a single expandable card which helps keep your screen clear of clutter. The update may appear minor yet provides a pleasant improvement to users.

Another addition is live update notifications. A new feature that supports real-time updates through status bar icons starts with select rideshare and delivery applications. The action of tapping these icons launches a small window which displays ongoing progress information. Google is teaming up with Samsung for the Now Bar and OnePlus for Live Alerts to enable this functionality.

Security also gets a boost. The Advanced Protection feature now applies to all operating systems running Android 16. Your phone loses connection to legacy 2G networks along with non-secure website access and USB data transfer ability when the feature is switched on. Google continues to expand its focus in areas of user privacy protections while maintaining device security.

The new AI-powered emoji feature offers fun customization options for users who appreciate personalization. The Pixel Studio app lets users develop their own emojis using the Emoji Kitchen feature. The feature serves as a playful addition which demonstrates Google’s increasing enthusiasm toward generative AI applications.

Android 16 introduces substantial development enhancements in its behind-the-scenes updates. One key improvement is automatic large-screen support. Android 16 (API level 36) enables applications to automatically adjust their size to enhance foldable and tablet displays. Developers who design with foldable and tablet displays in mind will notice apps appear better on large screens with this update.

The system integrates camera improvements into its functionality. Android 16 introduces support for hybrid auto-exposure capabilities as well as motion photos and night mode detection among other features. Users can now capture HDR screenshots although their availability depends on app compatibility. Google has implemented stricter background process guidelines to achieve better battery efficiency although this change will affect certain apps.

Pixel Drop Features: VIPs and More

The new Pixel Drop launches simultaneously with Android 16. Pixel users will see some exclusive additions although the Pixel Drop doesn’t contain a multitude of new features. The most important feature in this update is Pixel VIPs. The new feature expands upon the traditional favorite contacts system. The new dedicated widget lets users view recent WhatsApp and Messages conversations from VIP contacts along with shared location data and birthdays among other features. The new system allows VIP contacts to reach users even during Do Not Disturb mode.

The magnifier app now has expanded hearing aid support along with live search capabilities. Expressive Captions which were only available in the U.S. can now be accessed by users in the UK, Canada, and Australia.

The functionality of these features depends on Android 16 and they are restricted to Pixel phones.

Not every feature from Android 16 will be released on the launch date. Google plans to release the most awaited updates at a later stage in 2025.

Take Material 3 Expressive, for instance. The redesigned design language which Google revealed last month will launch later this year. Google hasn’t established an exact time frame but advises developers to start getting their apps ready at present. The updated design delivers an Android interface with enhanced colors and expression.

The eagerly anticipated new desktop mode has been added to Android. The new desktop mode for Android was developed together with Samsung and expands upon Samsung’s DeX system. Tablets and future phones will be able to display a windowed desktop interface on external displays through this mode. Foldable smartphones such as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold lack on-device windowing capabilities but support windowing through their external display.

OEM support is not guaranteed. Google Pixel devices will benefit from complete windowing capabilities while basic screen mirroring for other Android 16 devices will depend on each manufacturer’s choices.

The key change in Android 16 relates not to its features but to its release schedule. The release schedule for Android updates previously coincided with the fall Pixel hardware launches. That’s no longer the case. Google intends to launch significant Android updates in late spring while smaller API-focused updates will follow later in the same year.

The change establishes greater flexibility for the release timeline. The launch of Android 16 follows Google’s new release schedule and although it seems quieter than typical launches, it provides the groundwork for future developments.

The release of Android 16 might seem gradual since substantial updates like desktop mode and AI integration are planned for later in 2025. This development deserves our attention.
