Dominique Thorne Faces Off with The Hood in Ironheart Trailer
Ryan Coogler is on a roll. After dominating the box office with his most recent movie, Sinners, the filmmaker has an Ironheart on deck. Marvel has just released a teaser trailer for the series in advance of its June 2025 release.
The show will be a six-episode Marvel Cinematic Universe series starring Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams a.k.a. Ironheart, a young technology genius who is Tony Stark’s protégé in the comics. It will be the last television series in the MCU’s Phase Five.
Ironheart was first announced in December 2020 but was expected to premiere in 2023. Marvel has since shifted the long-term plans for the franchise, in part due to feedback that MCU releases were saturating the market. This caused a delay of many projects, including Ironheart, which has been rescheduled for this summer. Footage first shown at the 2024 D23 convention promised “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center.”
The MCU character made her first live-action appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. She became embroiled in a struggle with Namor and his army of blue-skinned warriors after developing a vibranium detector while she was at MIT. Riri develops a friendship with Shuri, in part due to their shared love of science. In Wakanda Forever, she ultimately designs and constructs an armored suit to protect Wakanda and its people, similar to Iron Man. This piece is modeled after Iron Man’s original suit, which she obtains before Shuri selflessly sacrifices herself to keep it safe. The hero returns the suit to the Wakandans and departs for MIT at the film’s conclusion.
The High Cost of Heroism
Ironheart chronicles the superhero’s adventures following the events of Wakanda Forever. As per the official summary, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos).”
Cast members include Lyric Ross as Natalie Washington (Riri’s best friend); Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana as Cousin John; Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington; and Anji White as Ronnie, Riri’s mother. Shea Couleé will also appear as Slug. Jim Rash, who first played the dean of MIT in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, will reprise his MCU role in Ironheart. Sacha Baron Cohen will also star, but no details about his character have been given as of this writing.
The official trailer is a swift-moving introduction to the action. Riri is first seen entering a shuttered pizza place, though her visit turns into a nightmare after she gets trapped inside a noxious elevator with only two minutes to escape. This turns out to be an “interview” for a crime syndicate, the leader of which is Parker Robbins a.k.a. The Hood. He tells her over the intercom that she will “fill up on poison” if she does not break into a device mounted on the floor, which has a gas mask inside. Riri declines to participate and instead concocts a creative solution of her own.
Pleased by her ingenuity, The Hood invites her to join him on a project that is not entirely legal. Riri, determined to show what she can do and build something truly “iconic” like her Iron Man predecessors, needs only a moment to decide to accept. The choice doesn’t sit well with Riri’s friends, at least, not with Natalie. She tells Riri that The Hood isn’t a person one should trust. The warning may be warranted since, as the Hood says to Riri, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
Ironheart is sure to have the young hero walk that tightrope in the name of innovation, which always comes at some sort of cost. How far is she willing to go for her ambitions, and what will be the consequences of her choices?
Marvel has officially set the release date for Ironheart’s first three episodes on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with the three subsequent episodes to drop every week thereafter. A second season is not yet on the books, but nothing is off the table either if Ironheart is successful. Fans can see some of the thrills, chills, and drama in action from the teaser trailer and a new behind-the-scenes featurette.
With Coogler’s track record of giving his blockbusters grounded stakes and emotion and Thorne as a promisingly nimble hero, Ironheart could be one of the next big hits for Marvel.
