Trump Hints at Diddy Pardon Despite Political Rift

Donald Trump is once again under the spotlight because of the potential impact he can have on hip-hop executive Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal troubles. In an interview on Friday, August 1, on the Newsmax program, Finnerty, Trump was asked by the host whether he would issue a pardon to Combs in light of his conviction last month.

In early July, Combs, the founder of the record label Bad Boy Records, was found guilty by a federal jury of one count of transportation with the intent to promote or engage in prostitution. He was acquitted of other, more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The seven-week trial was filled with testimony and drama, and included an alleged account by singer Cassie Ventura about Combs abusing and trafficking her during their relationship when she was a teenager. Combs has denied the allegations and maintained his innocence.

Asked about a potential pardon, Trump gave an equivocal answer that also left the door open to a possible clemency. “Well, he was sort of half-innocent, I guess you’d say,” Trump said, then continuing with a measure of vagueness and familiarity. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”

Trump also noted their previous friendship, an indication of how the two were reportedly quite close at one time. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” Trump said. But the former president also seemed to suggest that the relationship soured because of his foray into politics. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Trump Comments on Pardon Before

Of course, this isn’t the first time Trump has broached the subject of a pardon for Combs. In May, he had fielded a similar question from Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy while at a press briefing in the Oval Office. At the time, Trump seemed to be taking the same approach, to the extent that he said he would “look at the facts” before considering any such move. He was adamant that he would not be influenced by personal feelings.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump said in response to the question by Doocy. The former president went on to say that he would judge the matter on its merits despite their good relationship previously. “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Trial and Sentencing

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ federal conviction in July is in relation to a series of charges, the most serious of which he was acquitted of. In July, Combs was found guilty of one count of transportation with the intent to promote or engage in prostitution. He was acquitted, however, of more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The trial, which lasted for more than seven weeks, included testimony and controversy, including allegations by singer Cassie Ventura that Combs abused and trafficked her during a past relationship while she was still a teenager.

Combs, for his part, has denied the allegations against him and maintains his innocence. The now-former music executive is now facing up to 20 years in prison for the conviction. Sentencing is currently scheduled for October 3.

Trump and Sean “Diddy” Combs: Political Talk

The high-profile trial of hip-hop executive Sean “Diddy” Combs has once again put Donald Trump in the spotlight due to the potential impact he could have on the outcome. Trump has said he would consider issuing a pardon for Combs, who was recently convicted in federal court, but added that the former president would only do so if the facts support such a decision.

In an interview with Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy in May, Trump was asked whether he would consider pardoning Combs. Trump responded, “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.” Trump also noted that he had not spoken to Combs in years.

The high-profile trial and conviction of hip-hop executive Sean “Diddy” Combs has once again put former President Donald Trump in the political spotlight because of his public musings about a potential pardon for Combs. Trump has said that he would be willing to consider such a move, but only if the facts of the case warrant it.

During an interview with Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy in May, Trump was asked if he would pardon Combs. Trump said that if he felt somebody was “mistreated,” he would consider a pardon regardless of whether or not the person liked him. Trump added, “I haven’t spoken to him in years.” Trump has yet to make any final decisions on a potential pardon, but he has suggested that he is open to the idea.
